If It Were Up To Me... Winning Is Everything! by Peter Andrew Sacco I am sure you have heard the blather and rhetoric about how, “it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, but rather how you play the game that counts most.” Folks—winning in life is everything as too many people just ‘settle’, don’t get what they really want and wind up in the pit of mediocrity. Mediocrity is great if you like to sit on fences. With that said, you better find a good proctologist because sooner or later someone is going to have to remove the splinters from your backside! Winning is success. In order to be successful, you win the battles and projects you engage in. It absolutely matters how you play the game of life. If you give your best, focus on the ultimate prize of success or victory, then you have lived and played a great game and sooner than later, and consistently, you will start to conquer the worlds you have set out to master. Have you ever heard the famous positive thinking expression, “The me I see is the me I’ll be.”? Unfortunately, many people take this concept both at superficial and intrinsic levels. They literally hate the person they gawk at every morning in the mirror and they hate what they see inside—perhaps the number one reason most people don’t take the time to introspect is because they are afraid of looking. What most are afraid of seeing are their failures and/or lack of accomplishments. I am Editor-in-Chief of Vices: The Magazine for Addictions, Habits and Well-being. A couple of years ago we did a major web poll to find out what people perceived as the top ten bad habits. Did you know that procrastination was one of the top three bad habits which reared its ugly head for the three years we conducted the poll? At the root of procrastination was laziness! Gee, go figure! Most people are quick to fix things. They fix their cars, their homes, their appliances, their weight, their hair colour, their eyes, even the colour of their eyes with coloured contact lenses. Interestingly, most do not, nor will they ever, invest a concerted effort in fixing the inside…the mind, spirit and soul which is their driving force. People are afraid of what they can’t see. Perhaps they are afraid of what they might see below the layers. Have you ever wiped the steam away from your mirror after showering to get a better look at your face? Well then, why not wipe the clouds away and let the sunshine in and through you. People are like prisms. Einstein proved this with the refraction of light. If you let the light shine in you, you will reflect light outward and guess what? People love to be in the light! People constantly make excuses for where they are in their lives. Did you know that who you are today is the sum total of all of your days leading up to now? You didn’t get to where you are by accident! You made choices along the way, some good and some not so good which brought you to this defining moment called “now”—right here and right now! Do you know what is so wonderful about “now”? You have total control over this moment. You can think and feel anything you want to. You can become anything you want to become. You can set forth the blue prints today for how the rest of your life will play out. Imagine that you are an artist at this given moment in time, staring at a blank canvas. You have every imaginary color at your finger tips just waiting for the brush strokes to commence. Literally, you can paint your life into a beautiful mosaic of colours, collages, rainbows and themes. You can paint yourself into the “me” that you want to be. You just have to pick the colours! Most people don’t realize that they create “the mold” for themselves. This mold you create and perpetuate comes from making a conscious decision— for what you want, affirm that you are going to get it and then visualize yourself as having it. This totally holds true for your personality. What you see in yourself doesn’t have to be the truth or reality of who you are now. You get to change and manufacture the reality for your own existence. Many of the rich and successful people in the world weren’t born that way. They decided that was what they wanted to attain and be, and that is what they found. It had nothing to do with luck, rather commitment to a goal, working towards that goal and believing they would achieve that goal. And the rest is history. And for many, it is history in the making because they did not settle or become content. They are striving for their next level of goals and achievement. What do you really want in this life? Who and what do you really want to be? Why have you not become that person? What is holding you back? You can be anything you want to be. You own your mind and you control what you think which leads to how you feel. You are not a robot, rather an actor on the world, a painter creating the brush strokes. I have worked in the psychology/counseling field for nearly 20 years now. I have seen people with the worst addictions, anger management problems, bad relationships, psychological problems and other major set-backs overcome their obstacles and become “bigger” than themselves (who they were in the past). It all started out with a dream. That dream became a vision. That vision became a goal. And that goal became the stepping stone to bigger and better visions, dreams and goals! Start to change your life today. Pick up the paint brush and mark the first couple of strokes. What are you most passionate about in life? What do you want to do—be? Make a list of things and read them out loud. This is the landscape of your portrait. Once this is done, its time to fill in all the details and intricacies of the painting of your life. You are ready to make a splash and fill the canvass with colours. In as much detail, visualize yourself being the person you want to be and doing the things you want to do. Picture it as a reality. Most importantly, really feel the feelings as if it has already happened! What will it really feel like when you get there? See your life the way you want it to become and not the way it is now. If you focus on the way it is now, you are in a stalemate without further development. The key is to make a move—lift the first brush stroke! Most people give up after a few days or say this stuff doesn’t work for them. Of course it doesn’t work for you because you are not doing it or giving it a chance! Did you know it takes at least three weeks for a good habit to set in? Do you not have three weeks to spare and start to become the person you want to be? I have learned a lot from teachers, successful entrepreneurs, actors, musicians, athletes, celebrities, and everyday folks who have shared their secrets. As a self-help author they have taught me and showed me what works. As an international lecturer and therapist I educate people on the short-cuts to success. I guess I am like a travel agent—getting you to your destination in the shortest time and space possible. With that said, I guess I am with map in one hand and paint brush in the other! ### Peter Sacco is an author, psychology professor, international lecturer and former private practitioner.
